| yay! go Rara! lol | Quote: | (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain on Friday announced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate, calling her "the running mate who can best help me shake up Washington."
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hugs Sen. John McCain at a rally Friday in Dayton, Ohio, announcing her selection.
1 of 3 "She's exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second," the presumptive Republican nominee said at a Dayton, Ohio, rally of about 15,000 supporters, who welcomed the surprise pick of the relatively unknown politician with cheers and flags.
"She's got the grit, integrity, good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today," McCain said.
Palin, 44, described herself as a fighter against corruption and a bipartisan reformer in her first appearance as a candidate for vice president, an office she said she never expected to seek.
"I was just your average hockey mom in Alaska" before getting involved in politics, she said. "When I found corruption there, I fought it hard and brought the offenders to account."
Palin told the crowd, "To have been chosen brings a great challenge. I know that it will demand the best that I have to give and I promise nothing less." Watch Palin say she's honored to be picked »
Palin is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election.
Campaigning for governor, she described herself as a "conservative Republican, a firm believer in free-market capitalism" and "a lifelong Alaskan who grew up hunting and fishing."
She boasted of eliminating taxes as mayor in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska. She also was a City Council member in the town and was chairman of the Alaska's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates oil and gas resources.
Palin will be the first woman to be nominated for vice president as a Republican and only the second to run for vice president on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.
Palin also will be the first Alaskan to be on the ticket of either party.
She described herself Friday as "commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard" and noted that her oldest son, Track, is a U.S. soldier scheduled to deploy soon to Iraq.
But there also are aspects of her biography that make her unusual for a Republican candidate. McCain introduced her as a former union member and the wife of a union member, a nod to Ohio's strong organized-labor culture. iReport.com: What do you think of McCain's VP pick?
Sarah Palin
Born: February 11, 1964, Sandpoint, Idaho
Education: B.S., University of Idaho, 1987
Elected offices: Wasilla, Alaska, City Council member, 1992-1996
Wasilla mayor, 1996-2002
Elected governor of Alaska, 2006
Professional career: Television sports reporter, 1987-89; co-owner, commercial fishing operation, 1988-2007; owner, snow machine, watercraft and all-terrain vehicle business, 1994-97; chairwoman, Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, 2003-2004.
Nevertheless, she is under investigation for her firing of a state official, Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. She has been instructed to hand over documents and recordings of telephone conversations as part of the probe, which grew out of allegations she sacked Monegan for refusing to fire her former brother-in-law from the state police.
She has denied any wrongdoing,
But Palin acknowledged that a member of her staff made a call to a trooper in which the staffer suggested he was speaking for the governor.
Palin has admitted that the call could be interpreted as pressure to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, who was locked in a child-custody battle with Palin's sister. She suspended the staffer who made the call.
McCain apparently is making a concerted effort to reach out to former supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton who may be unhappy with the choice of Sen. Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee. Watch McCain praise Palin »
Palin mentioned Clinton by name in her speech, saying, "Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America. But it turns out the women of America aren't finished yet, and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all."
The remark brought a mixed reaction from the Republican crowd; some women cheered, but there was also some low-pitched groaning and booing.
Obama's campaign issued two simultaneous responses to Palin's announcement -- one from the candidate and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden, praising the choice, and another from a spokeswoman panning it.
"We send our congratulations to Gov. Sarah Palin and her family," the statement from Obama and Biden said, calling her selection "yet another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics. While we obviously have differences over how best to lead this country forward, Gov. Palin is an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign."
But at the same time, Obama spokeswoman Adrianne March said: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Gov. Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."
Rep. Thad McCotter, a Michigan Republican, said earlier that Palin has more executive experience than the entire Democratic ticket.
Most of the speculation about McCain's choice had focused on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut and 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas also had been mentioned as a possible long shot if McCain were to seek a woman.
Palin is the youngest person ever elected governor of Alaska and the first woman to hold the job. iReport.com: McCain's pick called "a stroke of genius"
She was dubbed "Sarah Barracuda" by opponents when she was mayor in Wasilla, resurrecting a nickname she earned as a state champion high school basketball player, according to the Almanac of American Politics.
She is married to Todd Palin, an oil production operator on Alaska's North Slope. They have five children. Her youngest, Trig, was diagnosed in utero with Down syndrome.
Palin has focused on energy policy during her short stint in office, and she is known for her support of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a position McCain opposes but many grass-roots Republicans support.

| ^Lmfao. My mom told me that the news found out that he really doesn't know that much about her. Soooo I'm thinking that he's just choosing her because he's a woman - he wants to have the first female vice president, in case Obama doesn't win, because he's black so that's a controversy, and she's a female so she's a controversy, you know? Which is very ignorant on McCain's part. _________________ Someone's a tease. |

| Yeah that whole thing with Palin is retarded. I read about her in the paper this afternoon (omg I actually read the paper...I almost never do...shame on me >.>) and she does not seem like Vice President material at all, she's very unexperienced. One really stupid thing I read about her is that she supports Library Book Censorship. WTH? censorship is such a stupid thing, honestly. THEY'RE BOOKS. OK there are probably some books out there that need to be kept away from children, I know, but doesn't that break the right of intellectual freedom? Anyways....I think it's really lame that she supports library book censorship. (it's a very small matter, I know, but hey...I love books >.>) _________________ LJ dA GDC TwitterGreen Day: July 16th, Copps ColiseumDepeche Mode: July 24th, Molson Amphitheater |

| ^omg, that's bullshit. cursing and shit lol develops character more! that's what makes part of the character's personality! Like....can you IMAGINE Catcher in the Rye censored? HOLY FUCK! Holden's cursing makes him who he is, it's his personality to curse. You can't just censor that! It's like you're cutting out parts of his personality! OMG. That book would just not be the same without all the cursing. Same with George in the book Of Mice and Men. He cursed a lot also and it was also a setting and time period that people would just curse all the time. And also....what about the era that the book takes place in? Like let's say the book was placed in New York in like the 1940's. I'm pretty sure that back then in that area they would curse a lot. That's just part of their culture. I mean, if you censor that out, you're just not being true to the culture back then. Or what if the person was like punk or just a smart ass or whatever. lol Like people in punk culture do curse a lot, and people that think they're tough and act like a smart ass probably do curse a lot too. It would just seem unnatural if they didn't. And sometimes cursing is just the only way to get your points across. I mean, it' just human nature to curse and I believe that if you add cursing into a character's personality, it just makes them seem more real and believeable. And yeah, author's should have the right to put whatever they want into their book. They wrote it! She is a complete idiot! Yeah, i can understand the children thing but really? What child would or actually could read a 100+ page book WITHOUT pictures? I mean, children like reading short books with pictures in them like barney shit. Not Harry Potter or something like that! I just...ugh! I can not stand that Library Book Censorship shit! And no Katelyn, this IS NOT a small matter LOLOL This is a BIG one. xD And I know that there are a lot more different kinds of censorship like religion censorship, graphic violence censorship, etc. but i think that the censoring cursing thing is what i hate the most. |

| This is part of The Obama Blog| Quote: | Debate Reviews: "The winner is Barack Obama" by: Amanda Scott Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 12:52 AM
10:48 PM ABC - George Stephanopoulos: "Barack Obama A minus, John McCain B plus….People wonder whether [Obama] has the experience to be President, to handle national security, and I think on answer after answer after answer, he showed confidence, he showed toughness and he showed he belonged on that stage."
11:51 PM ABC - George Stephanopoulos: And overall, bottom line, the winner is Barack Obama. He comes into this race where the country wants change, his number one goal was to show that he belonged on that stage…he could hold his own on national security, he did that tonight, he gets the win." 9:53 PM CBS – Myers: "Well, I think the one thing people were looking to, to see if Barack Obama could hold his own, could he sound like a commander in chief, did he have command of foreign policy issues, could he stand there toe-to-toe with John McCain and I think he passed that test with flying colors." 10:30 PM CNN-Gloria Borger - “He took it right to mccain on the tax issue and said to people out there, if you earn over 200 -- under $250,000 a year, nothing will happen to your taxes or you'll get a tax cut.” 10:51 PM PBS - Scott Horsley - "I think John McCain's conduct of economic policy over the last two days has to look a little erratic, has to look very seat of the pants, frankly." 10:54 PM ABC - George Will: "I think Barack Obama came out and looked comfortable and as though he belonged there. So, in a sense, the structure of the debate, indeed, the fact of the debate had to give a mild leg up to Barack Obama." 11:07 PM PBS - Mark Halperin - "I thought Obama clearly did better. I thought he had a chance to show that he was calm and prepared and capable of standing toe to toe with the more experienced McCain. I thought McCain spoke too much Washington jargon, told too many jokes in shorthand, made too many comments he knew what he meant but I don't think he conveyed it necessarily to the audience overall. I thought Obama was the better communicator an did what he needed to do to reassure people." 11:08 PM MSNBC - Richard Wolffe “That was the greatest contrast…the demeanor and the tone of voice that these candidates adopted where McCain was being much more pointed much more aggressive and curiously couldn’t look Obama in the eye. Obama’s tone much more straight and even keeled but ready to look his opponent in the eye repeatedly. A big contrast.” Denver Post: Obama says he would send "two to three brigades" to Afghanistan. McCain implies that Obama is wet behind the ears on military matters. Obama retorts with perhaps his best line of the night because it critiques McCain's temperament. Obama says that McCain has previously referenced extinction for North Korea and sang songs about bombing Iran, "so I don't know how credible that is."
Washington Post (Robinson) -The Debate: The All-Important Grumpiness Factor: Here’s the politically incorrect way of phrasing one of the central questions about tonight’s presidential debate: Did John McCain come across as too much of a grumpy old man. That might not be a nice question, but it’s an important one. Americans like to vote for the nice guy, not the grumbling prophet of doom. Throughout the 90-minute debate, McCain seemed contemptuous of Obama. He wouldn’t look at him. He tried to belittle him whenever possible -- how many times did he work “Senator Obama just doesn’t understand” into his answers? His body language was closed, defensive, tense. McCain certainly succeeded in proving that he can be aggressive, but the aggression came with a smirk and a sneer.
|
just thought i'd share that with you guys. xD
i agree with every comment, the last one especially.
i was thinking the EXACT same thing as i watched the debate. McCain acted too ignorant. He tried everything he could to try and get Obama to mess up. And yeah, he said "Obama just doesn't understand..." wayyy too much! Honestly, he acted like he knew everything! He could not go one question without saying "I did this..." "i did that..."
We don't CARE what he did! We want to know what he's GOING to do for America, not what he did a long time ago!
And honestly, everytime he talked, he didn't make any sense. He kept "stalling" in a way, and there was NO WAY he could get any of his points across to the audience, it didn't seem like he had any points to begin with! All he was doing was blabbing his mouth while Obama gave points to the audience and told the audience EXACTLY what he believes and EXACTLY what he's going to do when he becomes president.
And everytime Obama answered the question, it's like...McCain could not keep the smirk off his face! He kept smiling and smirking like in a "whatever, you're wrong" type of way. It's like, "come on! seriously, this isn't a joke! Obama's talking about something serious and you're over there smirking the whole time like something's funny cause i honestly didn't catch what was funny about what Obama was saying!"
I think that with those smirks of McCain's could cost him his campaign cause really, who wants another president who doesn't take anything seriously? I mean, he came off looking like a foolish child with those smirks of his and his "oh i know everything" type of attitude! That's just not professional at all. AT ALL. And he didn't really help his campaign much either when he said that he wasn't even going to attend the debate and wanted to postpone it. It's like, "I'm sorry, but you really have no choice."
Another mistake i think that McCain made is his electing Sarah Palin as vice president. She's an idiot! really, she is. and it didn't help when she declared, "Pray away the gay!" oh yeah, Palin! you're so clever to have thought of that wonderful rhyme of yours! you're so smart! -___- You know, at least now we know that gay people arn't voting for McCain. I believe that the only reason why McCain elected her as vice president is because she's a woman, it'll be conterversal. And also, then there will be women who will possibly vote for him because "oh, there will be a girl vice president!" and then guys, probably some of the same guys who didn't like Hilary and didn't want a girl president, will actually WANT Sarah Palin as vice president because "oh, she's so hot!" Actually...no she's not. lol I'm sorry, but she's just not.
And besides, looks have absolutely nothing to do with how good or bad of a president/vice president someone is. And also, gender has absolutely nothing to do with how good or bad of a president/vice president someone is. Someone just shouldn't vote for someone just because they're a girl, or just because they're a boy.
Here's what I think:
I think there are WAY more minorities out there than what McCain considers the majority (like the wealthy, he would probably consider the wealthy to be the majority because that's basically all what he's focused on...). Honestly, it's like you have minorities like gay people, middle-lower class, teenagers, different races, just all these minorities that i think Obama represents. Basically just the people who are the minority; the outcasts that the government really i feel doesn't care as much about, Obama cares about so I would think all those minorites would most likely vote for Obama.
I think that McCain is screwing up his campaign big time in my opinion. I don't see what people that like him and want to vote for him, actually SEE in him. I don't understand how they could like him. I mean, it just bugs me that they don't see how ignorant, manipulative, and foolish he is. I feel sorry for the people who only want to vote for McCain because they're racist because I believe that they're really fucking up not only their future, but their families future if McCain actually wins just because of their silly prejudices. =/
But yeah, anyway, I thought that Obama did tons better in this debate than McCain, definately. Obama kept his cool. He seemed much more comfortable on stage, much more collective in his thoughts, and spoke with a lot of confidence, and he stated the facts and stated his points clearly to the audience and everyone who was watching, and if you didn't watch the debate...i'm sure it's on youtube or something xD |

| I'm so fucking happy that he won! I started to cry as he stood up there at the podium delivering his winning speech. It was really emotional. It showed Oprah crying in the audience xD And FINALLY Indiana is a blue state, which it hasn't been since 1964 and also hasn't been a battle state since 1964 O______O |
